While finding excessive working hours and many violations of Chinese labor law, Foxconn and Apple agreed to reduce workweek and overtime hours within Chinese law to 49 hours per week and 36 overtime hours per month based on the FLA’s recommendations. Foxconn will also hire tens of thousands of new employees and implement a compensation package to make sure workers’ salaries remain the same amid reduced working hours....

With the Flipboard iPad news application only growing in popularity, the company behind the software is launching an iPhone version. The iPhone variant of Flipboard looks just like and functions almost like its larger iPad sibling but is obviously formatted for the iPhone’s much smaller display. The Indiana Supreme court has ruled that a suspect cannot be forced to unlock her iPhone using her passcode, rejecting a legal argument known as ‘foregone conclusion.’ While the argument used against her does have legal precedent, the use of it to compel disclosure of a passcode does seem absurd … The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) filed a brief in support of the suspect, and explains the argument made by the police....

Per Tim Cook’s announcement at this year’s AllThingsD conference, former EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson will be joining Apple. Jackson, who left the EPA in February of this year, will oversee environmental issues at Apple. Jackson, who has a chemical engineering background, will report directly to Tim Cook. Jackson stepped down from EPA Administrator in January when the Obama administration was moving toward supporting the Keystone pipeline which was highly controversial among environmentalists....

If you’ve been holding out on a new Apple Watch, waiting for an always-on display, a new Fossil smartwatch available for pre-order today might make for an interesting alternative. Fossil claims the watch can make it through a full day in this mode. Alternatively, you can opt for a lower-power mode which promises multi-day battery life… Multi-day mode still apparently supports notifications and heart-rate monitoring and is coupled to fast-charging....

Update: Bloomberg has now removed Apple from the headline and has updated the piece to hint that Apple is the client without actually saying so. Foxconn’s Taiwanese display subsidiary Innolux is investing $2.6B over the next two years in a new factory whose production will be exclusive to a single client, which Bloomberg reports to be Apple. Shortages of the iPhone 6 Plus have been attributed to supply difficulties with the display, so a move to protect future display supplies would be a logical one for Apple, though Apple has mostly sourced its displays to date from Sharp, Japan Display, LG and Samsung....

At issue appears to be the flammable aluminum dust that comes from polishing parts like the iPad 2’s aluminum back. A student group out of Hong Kong called Sacom published a report on the dangers of flammable airborne aluminum dust in a report on May 6, saying workers complained about inhaling the dust and about poor ventilation....
